Jabberwocky

The Fart Party

I just finished this book by Julia Wertz. It's her anthology of Fart Party comics, originally published in zine form and online (fartparty.org).

I really like Julia's style; her shapes all have this soft, round feel that makes for really nice eye candy. But she can be crude in her own cute way.

And I appreciate that she still draws in a more child-like style on her website. This style gives the effect of a note, rather than an essay; something a lot of cartoonists are reluctant to do, and it really goes along with her general lack of pretense, which I think is indicative of location.

These comics are all set in San Francisco, where the author lived until her recent move to Brooklyn, and they describe the scene there really well. Inhaling burritos, zines, and comix; drinking in the park; biking to Zeitgeist.

There's this sort of erratic sense in her work, by which I mean you get the feeling that she's not very worried about anything and just sort of flies by the seat of her pants. The strip is autobiographical, so there's a very real and genuine feeling to them, because it's all stuff that happens to everyone in one way or another.

It's easy to draw comparison to Snakepit or Jeffrey Brown or other autobiographical strips, but Julia has a flair for gore that, although a little forced, distinguishes her nonetheless. It seems like she has the potential to do some great work; I'd really like to see her doing longer strips. But with the support of a foreword by Peter Bagge, there's no question we'll be seeing more from Julia Wertz.

Pyrite Radio

So this is my first podcast. From now on, I'm going to be posting a one hour podcast every Sunday. Because I have Sunday off, and really, what else am I gonna do? If I were religious, I'd go to church; if I were lazy, I'd sleep; if I were healthy, I'd run. But I'm none of those things. Well, I might be a little lazy. But.

The reason for this site is that I'm putting out a zine called Candy & Cigarettes; it's mostly comics, an essay, a short story, an article, et cetera. The first issue will be printed right before SXSW. It'll be sold ($3) in stores like Austin Books & Comics, Waterloo Records, and Book People. And this blog will be moved to the official website once it's up, which should be quite soon.

Anyway, this is a bunch of music I like. Some of it's new, some old, some rare, some bare. I hope it makes your day a little better; that'd be swell.

Oh, and if it doesn't download or stream the first time, try again.
