Some friends of mine are throwing a Panty Party this Friday, June 27th, at the Beauty Bar in Austin. Entry is free if you get there in yr underwear.
Andrew Kuo
I love the shit out of some infographs. RISD grad Andrew Kuo started doing infographic music reviews for the NY Times a few months ago. Needless to say, I love the shit out of some Andrew Kuo infographs. Probably my favorite is his recent summer festival preview: Rock! Sun! Crowds! You Go Without Me.
Basically, he represents abstract data that comes into his head when thinking about whatever it is he's reviewing. Things that are this clever make me feel like an ass clown, but I love it.
He also has a pretty hilarious blog called Emo + Beer = Busted Career, where he posts by the moniker Earl Boykins?
As usual, Charlie Rose is all over it with an informative if unavoidably pretentious interview on "Charlie Rose Tomorrow."
George Carlin
One of the best American comedians in history died Sunday of heart failure. He was 71.
Carlin hosted the first-ever SNL. He nearly destroyed the FCC's censorship abilities through his scathing comic criticism "The Seven Dirty Words." And he was to be awarded the Mark Twain prize in November for his land breaking efforts.
Oh well, surely he didn't care; he probably made a few jokes about looking stupid in a hospital gown on the way out. I can't imagine him taking anything too seriously, much less his own death. I hope to be there myself someday.
It's kinda funny that a lot of people have posted things saying, like, "R.I.P. George Carlin" or "He's on a cloud somewhere, laughing at us," because he really hated that kind of shit and certainly didn't believe in heaven nor hell. I myself was guilty of putting R.I.P. on my tumblr post, until I remembered to pull my head out of my ass and stop mindlessly going with the flow.
Whatever, it just illustrates his core point: Most people go through life never questioning why we do the things we do. We've become robots, and he wanted to wake some of us up. Nietzsche called it being a free thinker; George Carlin called it not being an asshole.
Here's looking at you, George.
