Cinéma Magique

Stan Brakhage  was part of the new American avant-garde of the late 50s and early 60s, you know, the Black Mountain College crew that included people like John Cage (who staged his first happening there), Ray Johnson (who would later do nothings elsewhere), as well as John Chamberlain, Robert Rauschenberg, Robert De Niro's dad, Elaine de Kooning, Robert Duncan, etc.

Anyway, I read this great article about him, Stan Brakhage; although it is mostly about magic, really - the root of it and so on. You should just read the Brooklyn Rail article, Magic & Images/Images & Magic.

Watch this interview with Brakhage by Stephen E. Gebhardt and Robert Fries.

The Criterion Collection set By Brakhage is very good. If you're interested you should try to get it somehow.

The video above is Brakhage footage set to Stereolab's song, "Brakhage." Although he would surely hate the idea of it, it's still really cool.

Pyrite Radio

Anytime you write a post there's this initial phrase that comes into yr head. It's not often "fucking shit" but when it is you know you've got something. I think I've got something here. They're called A Faulty Chromosome

They're playing at the Mohawk on Saturday, August 9th, with Ariel Pink and Pataphysics. But, more importantly, they're playing the second Candy & Cigarettes release party (!) Saturday August 30th at Club de Ville at Club de Ville. More on that very soon.

Oh, and this video is fucking hilarious.

Sorry to repeat the song on the mix, especially at the beginning of it. I wouldn't usually do that but I'm kind of addicted anyway.

1. A Faulty Chromosome // Jackie O
2. Scary Mansion // Sorry We Took All Your Money
3. Don Caballero // Palm Trees In The Fecking Bahamas
4. Felt // Sunlight Bathed The Golden Glow
5. Le Stelle di mario Schifano // Abe Vigoda
6. Nerve City // The Creek
7. A Faulty Chromosom // The Pleasures of the Flesh
8. Jackie-O Motherfucker // Valley of Fire
9. Delia Derbyshire & Barry Berman // Land
10. Supermax // Ain't Gonna Feel
11. Kraftwerk // Techno Pop
12. Cabaret Voltaire // Sensoria

Delia Derbyshire was a bad ass witch.

I'm living in the sticks for a little while, until I move to San Francisco shortly after the release party. By the sticks I mean South Texas. By San Francisco I mean that beautiful fucking city that I can't wait to get to.
